Dirty Laundry

 

Dirty Laundry is an installation about child domestic and sexual abuse. It is about secrets and about telling. It is my story and your story. I was raised in a home where this occurred.  And I tell this not to shock, not for sympathy, but to help raise awareness, to stress public and personal education, and, especially, to offer a voice of hope and healing to those whose secrets are difficult to tell.

At this moment in time, there are an estimated 2 billion children on the planet and half of them experience some form of abuse daily. The work for this project is my attempt to encourage a more open dialogue about a problem we don’t like to speak about. Child abuse occurs across every social strata; it happens to children of all cultures, races and sexual preferences. Talking and recognizing that this mostly hidden violence occurs everywhere on a daily basis offers the opportunity for help, healing, and encourages new models for recovery, hope, and change.
